Rosie Crone
Rosie Crone is an emerging artist living and working on Waddarung country in the Kulin
nation. She grew up in Belfast and studied in Manchester before migrating to Australia in
1996. After a career in health care she is focussing on developing and enhancing her
painting and drawing skills. She works with various drawing media and paints with acrylic.
She combines figurative and abstract elements in monochrome or colour.
As an artist she loves to tell stories and has always been fascinated with cartoons, zines and anime that can distort or re-invent reality. Her illustration and zine work more directly tells a story but in her
painting the intention is to invite the observer to create their own story or interpretation from
the representations.
This is her first solo exhibition and is called Overworlds/Underworlds. The aim is to contrast
the overworld of colour and light with monochrome chiaroscuro night. The unifying concept is
isolation and alternative interactions as humans. The work will comprise single image acrylic
painting and multiple illustrations. The paintings reference real people observed in life and
the illustrations are a fantasy exploration of the Melbourne underground landscape. The
latter tell the story of one woman’s night journey which takes the form of sequential zine
illustrations.
The exhibition is also be the launch of her first printed zine ‘A night with
Belgrave’.
