Liminal Gallery
Liminal Gallery is the new name for Hue and Cry Gallery.
What does ‘liminal’ mean?
Liminal space is the space that lies between the known and the unknown. It is a transitional space of heightened intensity that we experience when we traverse the threshold of the creative unknown.
Liminal space: It’s where you are in between who you were and who you will be. It’s your becoming.
Why did we change our name?
There are a couple of reasons!
-
We took over in April 2023 and Hue and Cry was not a name which reflected our vision or the direction we are taking the gallery.
-
A new name is a chance for a fresh start, a shedding of the old and a hope for the future.
Who are we?
Liminal Gallery is a Geelong-based, commercial gallery which nurtures artists’ dreams.
We are a destination for creative excellence aiming to push the boundaries of contemporary art.
Liminal Gallery democratises contemporary art - meaning, we are passionate about making contemporary art accessible for all, without the normal misconceptions, often associated with the art world.
What are we passionate about?
-
We strive to discover the undiscovered artist.
-
We aid artists’ professionalism through professional development opportunities.
-
We act as a conduit in the artists’ journey to other leading regional, metro and national galleries.
-
We help artists in their journey to raise awareness of social subjects.
-
We consider exhibition work which might be considered unsuitable in a typical commercial gallery.
What we offer
Our beautiful, heritage-listed, two-story building provides safe studio spaces for artists to work in.
Our communal areas and open setting studios aim to build connection within the arts community of Geelong, working together to find and give more opportunities to creators and makers alike.
Our stockroom is full with the work of local artists, showcasing a variety of mediums
ranging from photography to pastel drawings, watercolour paintings to oils and more. You can view our current Stockroom works here.
Our exhibition spaces have changed a little since the beginning of 2023. We now offer three exhibition spaces in the main gallery area, and a dedicated photographic exhibition space to encourage the photographers in our community to exhibit their work.
Who are Liminal Gallery’s directors?
Liminal Gallery is run by Corey and Harriet Notaristefano. We took over ownership and operations in April 2023.
We are passionate about the arts community and creating a safe place for artists and members of the public to explore the arts. Our primary goal is to help creatives achieve their BIG dreams and champion individuals, no matter their age or background.
Corey is a self-taught, multi-disciplinary artist working primarily with photography and oils, who draws from his years of experience in operational management where he has worked to integrate systems and processes with creative excellence.
Harriet is the driving administrative force behind the gallery, establishing close relationships with artists, collectors and industry leaders. Through her involvement in international public art institutions, Harriet incorporates industry knowledge with a personable approach to accelerate creative’s professional development and offers collectors a fast-track to building their art-collecting journey.
We would like to acknowledge that we are creating on the traditional lands of the Wadawarrung People and we pay our respects to elders past and present.
We truly look forward to welcoming you to Liminal Gallery in the near future.
