Komorebi

"Komorebi: a Japanese phrase for 'the filtered light that passes through trees'. This body of work comes from my desire to find peace and contentment away from the frantic pace of the world. For me, gazing up at the sky through a canopy of leaves and observing the shadows they cast on the ground is one of my favourite things.. This search for tranquility and a deeper connection to nature is at the heart of this series.

The starting point for this work is the fallen eucalyptus leaves I collect during my daily interactions with the landscape. Each leaf, with its distinctive shape and texture, leaves unpredictable, tannin-rich marks on the canvas, creating unique and organic patterns that embody a profound connection to the land they come from.

In creating this series, I’ve used both cyanotype and eco-printing processes to integrate these eucalyptus leaves into my work. The leaves' natural characteristics add a layer of spontaneity and unpredictability to each piece. This process, which has taken me over two years to refine, reflects my commitment to environmental sustainability in my studio practice. I’ve incorporated a wastewater treatment system to responsibly manage the byproducts of the acrylic paint I use. For me, developing this sustainable process is as important as the final artwork itself.

With "Komorebi," I aim to reflect the peace and contentment I find in nature, combining elements of my Japanese heritage with the beauty of the Australian landscape. I hope these works give you a moment to pause, reflect, and connect with the world around us."
