Journey of the Birds
01 November 2025 - 22 November 2025
Christine Gibbs
I explore the themes of vulnerability and extinction within a research framework of
storytelling focussing on isolated environments. Processes include creating texture
and form, referencing the landscape and its ageing and wearing down to emphasise
the emotional response to place. Of particular interest are remote landscapes such
as Tasmania's central highlands, the far northwest of Western Australia and West
Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory.
The majority of works in this exhibition, are derived from sketches produced during a
visit to Mt Borradaile where the billabong is a haven for birds – as well as crocodiles.
The birds and crocodiles happily co-exist. Other works are inspired by visits to
Broome and the Berkeley River. My aim is to communicate the beauty and fragility of
these environments and the imperative to protect them.
