Devil in the Details

Molly O'Hara
A self-taught artist, Molly's work draws on human emotions and fantastical elements with the intention of provoking thought and inward reflection. She has produced multiple solo collections focusing on themes of childhood, femininity, and her lived experiences with health and wellbeing. Working within the local Geelong arts scene as the Director of Sequel Gallery, Molly strives to nurture and promote both emerging and established creatives alongside her own creative practice.
'Devil in the Detail' showcases Molly's exploration into a new style of subject matter; deviating from the artist's usual bright and nostalgic style and symbolising Molly's growth as a creative. This collection explores the ideology and themes of baroque, gothic and renaissance art and architecture, and draws from the artist's interests in fantasy storytelling, her Celtic heritage and history and mythology.
Titled 'Devil in the Detail' this collection addresses the 'death of details' in modern society as a result of our transition to minimalism in both and art and architecture. Incorporating fantastical elements and maximalist detail, these works draw inspiration from themes of opulence, death and rebirth, religion and femininity in baroque, gothic and renaissance period works.
A commentary on the societal shift from extravagance and maximalist detail, 'Devil in the Detail' invites the view to consider whether the devil is in the details, or in the loss of variety and over-simplification in art, architecture and society.
