Amalfitana- A photographic series by Jane Fitzgerald
“Infrared photography brings a vintage twist to the timeless beauty of the
Amalfi Coast."
This photographic series captures the timeless beauty of the Amalfi Coast,
Italy, through the lens of infrared photography. Using this unique medium, I
reimagine familiar summer scenes—beach umbrellas, sun-drenched waters,
and sweeping coastal landscapes—imbuing them with a warm, red-toned
light that transforms the essence of the region into something both
nostalgic and otherworldly.
Infrared photography reveals a hidden spectrum of light, offering an
alternate perspective on a landscape that is deeply associated with the
golden warmth of summer. The images in this series evoke a sense of heat,
relaxation, and leisure, while also creating a dreamlike atmosphere where
the typical blues of the sea and the bright summer skies are subtly replaced
by deep reds and rich earth tones. This shift in colour not only captures the
essence of the Amalfi Coast in a new light but also lends a vintage, almost
timeless quality to the scenes. The soft warmth of the infrared spectrum,
combined with the dreamy tones, evokes the feeling of old postcards or
faded memories, giving the work a sense of nostalgia and an intimate
connection to the past.
Through these images, I aim to shift the way we perceive iconic beach
scenes and familiar destinations. The warmth of the infrared light deepens
the sense of summer’s embrace, inviting a contemplative engagement with
the landscape. It’s a way of seeing that pushes beyond the visual and taps
into the emotional essence of a place.
This series explores the intersections of light, memory, and place, offering a
new lens through which to experience the Amalfi Coast—a landscape that,
in its infrared form, becomes a rich tapestry of warm tones, gentle contrasts,
and quiet moments, with a vintage allure that lingers long after the image is
viewed.
